Security Guard Jobs in Houston, Texas: License and Training Requirements

To work as a security guard in Houston, decide whether you want an unarmed or an armed post, complete the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) training for that level, and apply for the matching DPS licence through the Texas Online Private Security system (TOPS) with fingerprints and fees. Unarmed (non-commissioned) officers need Level II training; armed (commissioned) officers also need a Level III course of at least 45 hours with a firearms qualification. A course certificate is not the licence, and it does not let you start every assignment. This guide uses DPS rules, a TEEX course page and Allied Universal's requirements as checked on 27 October 2026; the DPS website did not load from our network that day, so confirm each step on it before you pay.

Choose Between Unarmed and Armed Roles

Non-commissioned security work is the unarmed route. Commissioned work is armed and has its own training and licence. Personal protection officers are a third category and are not entry-level guard jobs. Before paying for a course, read the vacancy and confirm which licence the employer needs, what the duties are (access control, patrol, reception, driving) and whether the employer trains you or expects an existing licence. Allied Universal's Houston page on 27 October 2026 listed both armed and unarmed patrol, dispatch and full-time officer openings, which shows how much the same title can vary.

Understand Level II Training

DPS requires Level II training and test for non-commissioned officer applicants, and Level II also comes before the armed and personal protection courses. As one example, TEEX, part of the Texas A&M University System, lists Private Security Level II (SAP201) as a 6-hour self-paced online course costing $60, with 90 days to complete it. It covers officer roles, legal aspects, communication, conflict resolution, use of force, written reports and emergencies, and certifies the training in TOPS for an unarmed registration. TEEX itself states that you must still apply for your licence with DPS and meet all application requirements before starting security work. Confirm the course with your prospective employer and keep the certificate. Sources: Texas DPS: Training and Continuing Education and TEEX: Private Security Level II.

Understand the Armed Commissioned Pathway

DPS lists the Level III course as a minimum of 45 hours, including a test and a course of fire, for commissioned security officers and personal protection officers, delivered by a licensed school and instructor. The firearm proficiency demonstration must be completed within 90 days of the application date, and a commissioned officer renewing needs a proficiency certificate no more than 90 days old. A personal handgun licence is not a security commission, and passing the course does not allow armed duty while the application is pending.

Separate Employer Requirements From Licensing Rules

Allied Universal, one of Houston's largest security employers, asks for a high school diploma or equivalent, an age of at least 18, strong customer service and communication skills, computer skills for site technology, and a background check with a drug and alcohol test. It says candidates from outside the security industry are welcome to apply. These are one employer's requirements, not Texas law, and individual posts may add driving, language or experience conditions. You also need the right to work in the United States; a security course or state licence does not give immigration permission. Use TOPS for the Correct Application

TOPS is the DPS system for private security licences. Its instructions separate an initial individual application, a renewal and an update when you change employer, so choose the right one instead of creating a duplicate record. Coordinate with the hiring company for the employment details, use accurate identity and contact information, keep copies of what you submit and watch for requests for more information. Complete Fingerprints and Background Requirements

DPS requires a fingerprint-based background check and uses IdentoGO for electronic fingerprinting, with a separate process for applicants who qualify for it. Submit the TOPS application and payment first, then follow the scheduling instructions, so the prints reach the private security programme. Bring the identification required, keep the receipt and answer history questions honestly. If you are worried about a past offence, read the DPS guidance rather than trusting a recruiter who promises approval. Source: Texas DPS: Fingerprinting Instructions.

Confirm When You May Start Working

A training certificate, an application receipt and an approved licence are different things. DPS allows unarmed work before the licence is issued only in limited circumstances tied to the application status, fingerprints, fees and the employer's own background check, and the employer must meet those conditions. Those provisions do not cover armed work. Get written confirmation from the employer that your status meets the rule before you take a post, and check any claim that a submitted form lets you carry a firearm with DPS. Budget for Training and Application Costs

List tuition, the DPS application fee, fingerprinting, uniform, equipment and travel separately, and check the current DPS fee schedule. Ask the employer which costs it pays or reimburses and on what conditions. Then compare the advert's hourly rate, guaranteed hours and overtime with the commute, because Houston posts can move between sites and include overnight shifts.

Prepare for the Employer Interview

Explain how you would communicate calmly, follow post orders, write an incident report and call for help when a situation is beyond your authority, using examples from customer service, other jobs or volunteering. Practise a short factual report that separates what you saw from what you assume. Ask about supervision, emergency procedures, lone working, breaks and site induction, and never claim a licence or experience you do not hold.

Maintain Your Credential and Records

Track the expiry date of your licence and check the renewal and continuing education requirements for your exact type, especially if you move between unarmed and armed work. Keep training certificates and employment records together so a renewal or employer change is quick.

A Note for Readers in Pakistan

Security officer roles in Houston require existing US work authorisation, and none of these employers sponsor visas for unarmed guard posts. Read how to find a job abroad from Pakistan for routes that do accept overseas applicants, and how to spot a fake overseas job offer before paying anyone who promises a US security job.
