You can find data entry jobs in Houston with no experience by searching for beginner clerical, records, billing and administrative roles alongside data entry clerk vacancies, and by showing accurate typing, basic spreadsheet skills and reliability. Some employers accept transferable experience or train new starters, but an entry-level label does not remove every requirement, so read each advert before you apply. This guide uses official pay and demand figures, the State and City job sources and one Houston employer advert we checked ourselves. It cannot promise a job, a wage or an interview.
What Data Entry Work Involves
Data entry means moving information from source documents into a system, checking it, and keeping the records accurate. O*NET, the US Department of Labor's occupation database, lists the core tasks for data entry keyers as locating and correcting data entry errors or reporting them to supervisors, compiling, sorting and verifying the accuracy of data before it is entered, and comparing data with source documents or re-entering it in verification format to detect errors. Depending on the employer you may also file documents, update spreadsheets, process forms and ask colleagues to clarify missing information.
O*NET puts the occupation in its lower preparation zones: it usually requires a high school diploma or GED, some roles need little or no previous experience while others want several months to a year, and training ranges from a few days to a year on the job. The work is repetitive, so consistency matters more than raw speed. A beginner should be ready to explain how they follow instructions, check completed work and handle a discrepancy without guessing. What the Official Figures Say About Pay and Demand
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) May 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics give the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metro area 4,430 data entry keyers with a median wage of $19.00 an hour, or $39,520 a year. For Texas as a whole the median is $18.69 an hour ($38,880 a year), and the national median is $19.88 an hour ($41,340 a year). These are medians for everyone in the occupation, not starting offers, and employers in Houston set their own rates. Source: BLS OES: Data Entry Keyers, which covers the national, state and metro figures.
Demand is the honest part of the picture. The BLS 2025 to 2035 projections show data entry keyer employment falling from 131,800 to 98,200, a decline 25.5% across the decade, with about 7,700 openings a year coming mainly from people leaving the occupation. The same table lists a high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry education, no work experience in a related occupation, and short-term on-the-job training. The practical lesson is to treat data entry as a way in, and to build spreadsheet, records and customer-contact skills that transfer to the administrative roles that remain. Start With Official Houston Job Sources
WorkInTexas.com is the State of Texas job search site run by the Texas Workforce Commission. Search it for data entry, clerical and records roles in Houston, then read each posting's requirements and apply through the route it gives. The site blocked our automated check, so confirm its current features yourself: WorkInTexas.com. Workforce Solutions, the public workforce system for the Houston-Galveston region, also runs career offices; its site did not load during our check, so ask an office directly which services are free.
The City of Houston recruits through its own job board, where you create an account, upload a resume and reuse the application across openings. Applications must show all relevant education and experience, and a Job Interest Card gives you notice of future openings in a category. Harris County and METRO recruit separately. Our jobs hiring now in Houston guide walks through those public employers. Official page: City of Houston job board.
An Employer Advert We Checked: Hays Electrical Services
When we checked on 26 October 2026, Hays Electrical Services, an electrical contractor whose site says it has 19 years in business and licences in 39 states, had an Administrative & Data Entry Coordinator advert posted on 22 October 2026 on its careers page. The advert is labelled Entry Level, full-time and onsite in Houston, Texas, within the company's training and development department.
The duties it lists are editing and maintaining Word and Excel documents, some of them confidential, keeping organised electronic and physical files, helping with an inventory of books, tools and documents, high-volume data entry with consistent speed and accuracy, entering data into RAPIDS, the federal registered apprenticeship records system, and other internal systems, troubleshooting basic data issues and escalating them, and communicating with internal teams to resolve discrepancies or clarify missing information.
The required skills are attention to detail and organisation, discretion with confidential information, proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, the ability to do repetitive high-volume entry accurately, written and verbal communication, handling several priorities, and basic problem solving. The advert lists no minimum years of experience. On pay it says only "Competitive salary based on experience" and names medical, dental, vision and 401(k) benefits, so there is no published figure to quote. The application form asks whether you are at least 18, whether you are legally authorised to work in the United States, whether you will need sponsorship, and your desired compensation range, and it takes a resume up to 5 MB.
We link the careers page rather than the single advert because adverts close without notice: Hays Electrical Services careers page, and the company site is hayselectrical.com. If the coordinator role has gone, the page shows what else the company is recruiting for. An entry-level label still means you need the stated skills, so confirm the current advert, training and start date rather than assuming beginners are accepted.
Search Beyond the Exact Job Title
Employers often place data entry duties inside office assistant, records clerk, billing clerk or administrative coordinator positions. Searching those titles on the State and City sites reveals work that a narrow data entry search misses.
Read how much of the day is spent entering information and what else is expected. A position may also involve answering calls, dealing with customers or coordinating schedules. Decide whether you are comfortable with the whole role, not only the typing part.
Practise Accuracy Before Claiming Speed
Use made-up records to practise entering names, dates, quantities and reference numbers, then compare every completed row with its source and count the errors. If you put a typing speed on your resume, test it under stated conditions and give the accuracy alongside it. There is no universal typing threshold; each advert sets its own. Practise numbers as well as text, because invoices, inventory codes and account references are where mistakes cost the most.
Build Basic Spreadsheet Confidence
Build a small spreadsheet from invented information. Practise entering records, keeping formats consistent, adjusting columns, and sorting or filtering the whole dataset so related fields stay together. Learn to spot blank entries, inconsistent dates and duplicated rows, and do not delete or change uncertain information without understanding the instructions. A good interview example is the issue you noticed and how you checked it.
Write a Resume Without Inventing Experience
Include education, relevant coursework, volunteering, projects and any genuine employment. Describe tasks that show accuracy or organisation, such as keeping attendance records, checking stock counts, scheduling activities or filing documents. Use specific examples instead of calling yourself hardworking, and list software only at the level you can demonstrate. If your experience is in customer service rather than an office, explain the relevant responsibilities plainly.
Billing, Records and Processing Roles
Billing support and document processing jobs can involve a great deal of data entry, but some want industry knowledge, accounting basics or a particular system. Check whether training is provided and which qualifications are mandatory. Ask how errors are reviewed and who handles uncertain information, so you know the escalation process instead of feeling expected to make unsupported decisions. Confirm whether the job includes customer calls, payment queries or deadline-driven work.
Compare Pay, Hours and Location
Compare adverts with similar duties and schedules. Ask for the hourly rate, expected weekly hours, training pay, the employment arrangement and benefits. Use the BLS Houston median of $19.00 an hour as a reference point, not as what a beginner is owed, and do not take a figure from a different role as a reliable expectation.
For office roles, check the actual address and commuting time. For part-time work, confirm whether hours are fixed or vary. Temporary assignments may have an end date or an uncertain continuation, so clarify those conditions before deciding.
Remote Data Entry Offers and Scams
Remote data entry adverts need the most checking. Find the employer's own website and confirm that the vacancy and the recruiter match it. The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says: "Honest employers, including the federal government, will never ask you to pay to get a job." It also warns that "If you get an offer that includes depositing a check and then using some of the money for any reason, that's a scam." Check location eligibility, working hours, training attendance and equipment arrangements too; remote does not mean worldwide or flexible, and a Houston search can include jobs that require residence elsewhere. Read FTC: Job scams and report scams at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Prepare for Assessments and Interviews
An assessment may test typing, checking information, spreadsheet use or following written instructions. Read the directions first, ask when something is unclear and prioritise accurate completion within the time given. Prepare examples of meeting a deadline, correcting an error, learning a new process and protecting private information. Ask how training works and how performance is measured. Keep an application tracker with the employer, role, date and next step, and use feedback to improve the skills that come up most.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I apply without a previous data entry job?
Yes, when the employer accepts beginners or transferable experience. The BLS lists no work experience in a related occupation as typical for data entry keyers, but each advert sets its own requirements, so show accuracy, computer familiarity and the ability to follow instructions.
Do I need a college degree?
Usually not. The BLS gives a high school diploma or equivalent as the typical entry education. Read each advert for its own education conditions and include relevant training and projects accurately.
How much do data entry keyers earn in Houston?
The BLS May 2025 median for the Houston metro area is $19.00 an hour, or $39,520 a year, across 4,430 workers. That is the midpoint for everyone in the occupation, not a beginner offer.
Is data entry a growing field?
No. The BLS projects a 25.5% decline nationally from 2025 to 2035, with about 7,700 openings a year from people leaving. Use data entry as an entry route and build skills that transfer to wider administrative work.
Is fast typing enough?
No. Accuracy, organisation, communication and careful handling of information matter as much. Many roles also want spreadsheet skills, customer contact or other administrative duties.
Are all entry-level listings suitable for beginners?
No. Search categories mix in experienced positions, and an entry-level label does not remove the listed skills. Inspect the mandatory qualifications and actual duties, especially when software or industry knowledge is named.
Will the employer train me?
Often, since the BLS lists short-term on-the-job training as typical, but arrangements differ. Ask what is covered, how long it lasts, whether it is paid and who supports you afterwards.
Is the Hays Electrical Services job still open?
It was open when we checked on 26 October 2026, posted four days earlier. Adverts close without notice, so check the company's careers page for the current position before you prepare an application.
