To drive a truck for a living in Dallas you need a commercial driver's licence (CDL), and the route is the same for everyone: choose Class A or Class B, pass the knowledge test for a learner permit, train with a registered provider, then pass the skills test. Since 1 June 2026 Texas gives its CDL knowledge tests in English only. Some carriers hire newly licensed drivers or pay for training, and local home-daily jobs exist, but "no experience" never means driving a truck without a CDL. Heavy truck drivers earned a national median of $58,640 in May 2025. This guide uses Texas DPS announcements, FMCSA and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, checked on 30 October 2026.
Choose the Right Driving Job
Local jobs keep you in a smaller area and are the usual home-daily work; regional routes cover a wider area; over-the-road (OTR) jobs can keep you away for days or weeks. Always ask for the real home-time schedule. The vehicle changes the job too:
- Tractor-trailer: combination vehicles, usually Class A.
- Dump and construction trucks: heavy straight trucks, often Class B.
- Refrigerated (reefer): temperature-controlled freight.
- Flatbed: securing and covering loads yourself.
- Furniture and appliance delivery: driving plus lifting at the customer's door.
Box trucks and hotshot rigs may or may not need a CDL, depending on the vehicle's weight rating and what it tows; the job title does not tell you.
Class A or Class B
Under the federal rules Texas follows, a Class A CDL covers combinations with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more where the towed vehicle is rated over 10,000 pounds, which means most tractor-trailers. A Class B CDL covers single vehicles rated 26,001 pounds or more, towing a vehicle rated 10,000 pounds or less, such as dump trucks and large straight trucks. Hazmat, tanker, passenger and other work need endorsements on top. Texas lets you hold a CDL from 18 for driving inside Texas, but carrying freight across state lines generally needs you to be 21 and to hold a federal medical certificate. A "local" job can still be interstate commerce, so ask the carrier which applies.
How to Get a CDL in Dallas
- Hold a valid Texas driver licence and gather the identity, lawful presence, Social Security and medical self-certification documents DPS asks for.
- Book a DPS appointment and pass the knowledge test to get a commercial learner permit (CLP).
- Hold the CLP for at least 14 days before you can take the skills test, practising only with a qualified CDL holder beside you.
- Complete entry-level driver training (ELDT) with a provider listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry.
- Pass the skills test: vehicle inspection, basic control and the road test.
Texas DPS says applicants scheduled for CDL or CLP knowledge tests on or after 1 June 2026 must take every written and automated knowledge exam in English, with no interpreters; the Spanish option was removed. The skills test has always been in English. DPS publishes the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver's Handbook and study materials free on its website. Training for Beginners
Since 7 February 2022, anyone getting a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time, upgrading from B to A, or adding a first hazmat, passenger or school bus endorsement must complete ELDT with a provider registered on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry before the skills test. The provider reports your completion to the registry, and Texas checks it before you test. Before paying any school, confirm it is on the registry and ask about classroom hours, individual driving time, the test vehicle, total fees, retest charges and refunds. Official site: FMCSA: Training Provider Registry.
Some large carriers run company-paid CDL training or reimburse tuition for new drivers. These usually come with a commitment to drive for the carrier, and leaving early can mean repaying the cost. Read the contract, the repayment clause and the training pay before you sign, and ask whether travel, lodging and meals during training are covered.
Home Daily and Part-Time Jobs
Home-daily jobs suit drivers with family commitments, but they do not promise daytime hours, short shifts or free weekends. Ask where the terminal is, what time you report and how long a normal day lasts. Part-time driving jobs are sometimes a full workload packed into fewer days, so check the hours. For overnight and weekend routes, plan around rest and the commute.
Pay
The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the national median for heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers at $58,640 a year ($28.19 an hour) in May 2025, with employment projected to grow 4% from 2025 to 2035. That is a national figure, not a Dallas starting rate. Carriers advertise weekly averages that depend on miles, loads and home time, so compare offers on how you are paid (hourly, per mile or per load), any guaranteed minimum, detention and breakdown pay, benefits and deductions, and whether a sign-on bonus must be repaid. Owner-operators earn revenue, not salary: fuel, insurance, maintenance and truck payments come out first. Source: BLS: Heavy and tractor-trailer truck drivers.
How to Apply
Prepare your work history, licence class, endorsements and training record, and apply on the carrier's own website. Be honest about your experience in interviews and ask about loading duties, dispatch, equipment, mentoring and routes. Search terminals in Fort Worth, Irving, Arlington and nearby towns too if the commute works. Craigslist-style adverts can be leads, but check the company before you share documents, and never pay a fee to be hired.
Non-Domiciled CDLs and Readers in Pakistan
Work authorisation alone does not make you eligible for a Texas CDL. DPS resumed issuing non-domiciled CLPs and CDLs on 1 June 2026 only for H-2A agricultural workers; H-2B and E-2 holders were pending federal approval. Check the current DPS page before enrolling in any course. Readers in Pakistan should read the best countries for truck drivers to work abroad and how to spot a fake overseas job offer.
