Senior React Developer Jobs in USA

Senior React Developer Jobs in USA

"Senior React developer" is the best-paid title in this discipline and the least defined. Every salary site publishes an average for it, every advert uses it, and no federal source recognises it as a level at all. That gap is worth understanding, because two parts of US law do attach real consequences to the word, and neither is what candidates are usually told to negotiate about.

This page covers those two. It does not re-argue which pay band a senior React role sits in, because our main React developer guide does that in full: the same title can be benchmarked against two different occupations, and scope rather than years decides which.

There Is No Federal Definition of Senior

Start here, because it explains why published "senior" averages disagree with each other so wildly.

The Standard Occupational Classification, which is the framework all US federal wage data is published against, has no seniority tier. The 2018 definition of 15-1252 Software Developers lists illustrative examples — Computer Applications Engineer, Computer Systems Engineer, Mobile Applications Developer, Software Applications Architect, Software Engineer, Systems Software Developer — and not one of them contains the word "senior". There is no SOC code for a front end developer either; the nearest are 15-1252, 15-1254 Web Developers and 15-1255 Web and Digital Interface Designers.

Federal wage law is blunter still. 29 CFR 541.400(a), on computer employees, says:

"Because job titles vary widely and change quickly in the computer industry, job titles are not determinative of the applicability of this exemption."

And the federal government does not use the title for its own developers. OPM's Information Technology Management Series, GS-2210, runs from GS-5 to GS-15 under the official title "Information Technology Specialist" with parenthetical specialities. There is no Senior Developer grade.

So when an advert says "senior", it is making a claim about scope that only the employer is defining. That is not a reason to distrust it. It is a reason to read the duties rather than the adjective.

What BLS Actually Publishes

Federal data is published by occupation, not by grade. As of May 2025:

  • Software developers — median $135,980. The lowest 10 per cent earned less than $82,460, and the highest 10 per cent more than $214,670.
  • Software quality assurance analysts and testers — median $104,300, with the lowest tenth under $61,440 and the highest tenth above $167,010.
  • Web developers — median $92,650, which is the occupation a React role scoped as implementation rather than engineering is benchmarked against.

Two things about those numbers that nearly every salary article gets wrong.

The percentiles are a wage distribution, not a career ladder. The 90th percentile is not "senior pay" and the 10th is not "junior pay". A senior developer at a small agency and a mid-level engineer at a large platform company can sit on opposite sides of the median. The Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics programme defines the median as the boundary "between the highest paid 50 percent and the lowest paid 50 percent of workers in that occupation" — it describes workers, not grades.

The mean is not the median. The same May 2025 survey puts the mean annual wage for software developers at $148,100, about nine per cent above the median, because high earners pull an average upward and a median ignores them. A large share of "average salary" figures in circulation are means quoted as if they were typical. If you are comparing an offer, compare it against the median.

On demand: employment of software developers, quality assurance analysts and testers is projected to grow 10 per cent from 2025 to 2035, which BLS classes as much faster than the average for all occupations, with about 106,100 openings projected each year. No vacancy count for senior roles appears on this page, because job boards count adverts rather than jobs and cannot be reconciled with that series.

The Thing That Really Changes: Overtime

This is the most consequential fact about becoming a senior developer in the United States, and it appears in no careers guide on the subject: you are almost certainly exempt from overtime, and the exemption written for your job has its own separate pay rule.

Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, the computer employee exemption at 29 CFR 541.400(b) applies where the employee is paid on a salary or fee basis at not less than $684 per week, equivalent to $35,568 a year for a full-year worker. There is also an alternative that exists for almost no other occupation:

"The section 13(a)(17) exemption applies to any computer employee compensated on an hourly basis at a rate of not less than $27.63 an hour."

That matters for senior contract work priced by the hour. An hourly senior React contractor engaged as an employee is over that line many times over, so the hourly rate does not preserve any overtime entitlement.

Be careful which salary threshold you read

This is the single most commonly wrong figure on the subject right now. A 2024 Department of Labor rule raised the threshold to $1,128 a week, and that figure is still widely quoted as current. It is not. The 2024 rule was vacated by the US District Court for the Eastern District of Texas on 15 November 2024 and by the Northern District of Texas on 30 December 2024, and after the Fifth Circuit dismissed the appeals in May 2026 the Department published a technical amendment removing the vacated text from the Code of Federal Regulations and republishing what preceded it. In the Department's own words:

"the operative version of the Department's part 541 regulations is the version of these regulations that was in place on June 30, 2024, prior to the effective date of the 2024 rule, and which the Department has been enforcing."

So the operative figures are $684 a week and $27.63 an hour. If a page quotes $1,128 or $58,656, it has not been updated since the vacatur.

The duties, and the senior-specific route

Pay alone does not create the exemption; the primary duty has to match. Under 29 CFR 541.400(b) the exemption applies only to computer employees whose primary duty consists of:

  • "The application of systems analysis techniques and procedures, including consulting with users, to determine hardware, software or system functional specifications";
  • "The design, development, documentation, analysis, creation, testing or modification of computer systems or programs, including prototypes, based on and related to user or system design specifications";
  • "The design, documentation, testing, creation or modification of computer programs related to machine operating systems"; or
  • "A combination of the aforementioned duties, the performance of which requires the same level of skills."

There are express exclusions at 29 CFR 541.401. The exemption "does not include employees engaged in the manufacture or repair of computer hardware and related equipment", and it does not reach employees "whose work is highly dependent upon, or facilitated by, the use of computers and computer software programs" but who are not primarily doing the work above.

And there is a provision written for exactly this grade, at 29 CFR 541.402:

"Similarly, a senior or lead computer programmer who manages the work of two or more other programmers in a customarily recognized department or subdivision of the employer, and whose recommendations as to the hiring, firing, advancement, promotion or other change of status of the other programmers are given particular weight, generally meets the duties requirements for the executive exemption."

Read that as the mentoring line in a senior advert, expressed as law. The moment "mentoring junior developers" becomes managing two or more of them with weight given to your views on their advancement, a second exemption route opens. The practical consequence is worth stating plainly: the mentoring duties that justify the senior title are also the duties that remove any overtime claim. That is not a reason to refuse them. It is a reason to price them into the salary, because they will not be paid for by the hour.

Where US Law Does Put a Number on "Senior"

There is one place, and it is the reason this section exists: the Department of Labor's prevailing wage system for sponsored roles. Wage determinations are issued at four levels, and the official definitions are the only federal wording that grades seniority:

  • Level I (entry) — "beginning level employees who have only a basic understanding of the occupation", performing routine tasks "that require limited, if any, exercise of judgment", working "under close supervision".
  • Level II (qualified) — employees "who have attained, either through education or experience, a good understanding of the occupation", performing "moderately complex tasks that require limited judgment".
  • Level III (experienced) — employees "who have a sound understanding of the occupation and have attained, either through education or experience, special skills or knowledge", performing "tasks that require exercising judgment", who "may coordinate the activities of other staff" and "may have supervisory authority over those staff".
  • Level IV (fully competent) — employees with "sufficient experience in the occupation to plan and conduct work requiring judgment and the independent evaluation, selection, modification, and application of standard procedures and techniques", using "advanced skills and diversified knowledge to solve unusual and complex problems", who "generally have management and/or supervisory responsibilities".

Now the part that makes this concrete. The same guidance names the job title itself as evidence:

"Words such as `lead' (lead analyst), `senior' (senior programmer), `head' (head nurse), `chief' (crew chief), or `journeyman' (journeyman plumber) would be indicators that a Level III wage should be considered."

So in the sponsored part of the US market, the word "senior" in your title has a direct effect on the legal wage floor for the role. Two further details matter: "All employer applications for a prevailing wage determination shall initially be considered an entry level or Level I wage", so the level has to be justified upward from the bottom by the employer's stated requirements and duties; and level assignment turns on those requirements rather than on the title alone.

The floor itself comes from 20 CFR 655.731(a), which requires that the wage paid "shall be the greater of the actual wage rate ... or the prevailing wage". The actual wage is "the wage rate paid by the employer to all other individuals with similar experience and qualifications for the specific employment in question". In other words, an employer cannot use the prevailing wage as a discount against what it already pays its own senior engineers.

What To Settle Before You Accept

  • Which occupation the role is benchmarked against. The gap between the web developer median and the software developer median is over $43,000, and the title does not tell you which side you are on. The main React guide explains how to read the scope.
  • How many people you will be responsible for, and whether it is written down. This is the difference between a senior engineer and an unpaid manager, and 29 CFR 541.402 is the reason it should be priced rather than absorbed.
  • Whether the mentoring is part of the job or in addition to it. Ask what happens to your delivery expectations when you take it on. If the answer is nothing, the answer is that both are expected.
  • For hourly contract work, whether you are engaged as an employee or as a contractor. Those are different tax positions entirely, and our remote React guide sets out the self-employment tax, quarterly payments and misclassification test that follow.
  • For a sponsored role, which wage level was certified. It is a matter of record, it is not confidential from you, and the difference between Level II and Level III on the same job is real money.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do senior React developers earn in the USA?

No federal source publishes a wage for a senior React title. BLS publishes by occupation: software developers had a $135,980 median in May 2025, with the top tenth above $214,670, and web developers a $92,650 median. Which of those a senior React role is benchmarked against depends on its scope.

How many years of experience make you a senior developer?

No federal source defines it. The Standard Occupational Classification has no seniority tiers, and 29 CFR 541.400(a) says job titles "are not determinative" in this industry. Employers set the bar, which is why advertised requirements for the same title vary so widely.

Do senior developers get paid overtime in the USA?

Usually not. The FLSA computer employee exemption applies from $684 a week on a salary or fee basis, or $27.63 an hour, provided the primary duty matches the regulation. Almost every senior developer salary clears that threshold many times over.

Is the overtime salary threshold $684 or $1,128 a week?

$684. The 2024 rule that raised it to $1,128 was vacated by two federal courts in November and December 2024, and the Department of Labor has since republished the earlier regulatory text. Any page still quoting $1,128 or $58,656 is out of date.

Does mentoring juniors change my legal status?

It can. 29 CFR 541.402 states that a senior or lead programmer who manages two or more other programmers, and whose views on their advancement are given particular weight, generally meets the duties test for the executive exemption. Price that work into the salary, because it will not be paid hourly.

What is a Level III prevailing wage?

One of four levels DOL issues wage determinations at, for experienced employees with a sound understanding of the occupation who exercise judgment and may coordinate or supervise others. The guidance names "senior (senior programmer)" as an indicator that Level III should be considered.

Can a sponsored senior role be paid below what the team earns?

No. Under 20 CFR 655.731(a) the required wage is the greater of the prevailing wage and the actual wage, and the actual wage is what the employer pays its other people with similar experience and qualifications for that work.

Why do published senior salary averages disagree so much?

Partly because no source defines the title, and partly because many quote a mean as though it were typical. For software developers the May 2025 mean is $148,100 against a $135,980 median, which is about nine per cent of apparent difference from arithmetic alone.
