React Developer Jobs in USA

React Developer Jobs in USA

React is the most common word in US front end job adverts, and "React developer" is one of the most competitive titles to apply for. Two things decide whether you sit at the bottom of that market or the top, and neither of them is knowing more React.

The first is whether your work looks current, which in 2026 is measurable in about thirty seconds by opening your portfolio. The second is which kind of React work you do, because one kind is commodity-priced and the other is not. This guide covers the pay, then both of those.

React Developer Salary in the USA

React is a library, not an occupation, so there is no federal wage line for it. React roles are counted in one of two occupations, both as of May 2025:

  • Web developers — $92,650 median, from under $48,100 at the tenth percentile to above $162,290 at the ninetieth. Most roles advertised as "React developer", "React JS developer" or "frontend React developer" sit here. The spelling varies by employer; the job and the pay band do not.
  • Software developers — $135,980 median. Roles where React is one part of owning a product's engineering, rather than the whole job.

The usual ladder against those figures:

  • Entry level and junior: $65,000 to $90,000 at product companies and in the major metros. With a tenth of the web developer occupation under $48,100, first offers in the fifties at agencies and outside the big cities are normal rather than a red flag.
  • Two to five years: $95,000 to $130,000.
  • Senior: $135,000 to $175,000, with the top tenth of web developers starting above $162,290 and product-engineering roles benchmarked against $135,980 instead.
  • Freelance and contract: $40 to $100 or more per hour, which is the widest band on this page and the one most worth understanding before you quote.

Pairing React with backend work, or with TypeScript at a serious level, is the most reliable way to be benchmarked against the higher occupation. Our full stack developer guide covers how to tell which of those two bands a job title is actually sitting in.

Are React Developer Jobs in Demand?

There is no federal projection for React, for the same reason there is no federal wage line for it. The occupation it is counted in does have one. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment of software developers, quality assurance analysts and testers to grow 10 per cent from 2025 to 2035, which it classes as much faster than the average for all occupations, with about 106,100 openings projected each year on average across that decade.

Two cautions before you lean on it. The figure covers a far wider group than React work, so read it as the weather rather than a forecast for one library. And check which projection cycle a number comes from: figures still in circulation for a 15.8 per cent rise and 115,200 annual openings belong to the previous 2024 to 2034 round and have been superseded.

Counting live vacancies is the other common way this question gets answered, and it is the less useful one. Job board totals double-count the same role across boards, include reposted and stale adverts, and move with how a board indexes rather than with hiring. No vacancy count is quoted on this page for that reason.

Your Toolchain Dates You: What Changed in React

This is the most actionable thing on this page, because a hiring manager can check it faster than they can read your CV.

  • Create React App was officially sunset on 14 February 2025. It still runs, but it receives no security patches, no dependency updates and no compatibility fixes.
  • React's own documentation now points new projects at a framework — Next.js and React Router among them — or at Vite for a client-rendered single-page app.
  • React 19 shipped on 5 December 2024, and React Server Components are stable in it.

The practical consequence: a portfolio whose projects were scaffolded with Create React App reads as someone who stopped learning in 2023, whether or not that is true. Rebuilding one project on Vite, or on Next.js if it benefits from server rendering, is a weekend of work and changes the first impression entirely.

It also tells you what to learn next. If you know React but not a framework, Next.js with the App Router is the highest-leverage thing you can add for US postings. If you are working on internal tools and dashboards, Vite is the correct default and worth saying so in an interview — knowing when not to reach for a framework reads as judgement.

Which React Work Pays, and Which Is Commodity-Priced

Freelance React developer jobs in USA banner covering contract and remote React work

Not all React work is priced the same, and the difference is substitutability rather than difficulty.

Commodity work is anything where the specification is complete before you start and the output is verifiable at a glance. Converting a Figma file into components is the clearest example: the design is decided, the acceptance criterion is that it matches, and hundreds of people can do it. It is genuinely useful work and it is also the first thing a client shops around on price.

Work that carries a rate is where the decisions are not yet made:

  • State architecture. Deciding what lives in server cache, what lives in client state and what lives in the URL — and being able to defend it
  • Data fetching and caching, including the stale-data and race conditions that appear only under real use
  • Rendering strategy — what is server-rendered, what is static, what is client-only, and what that costs
  • Performance against a budget rather than a vibe
  • Testing and refactoring a codebase somebody else left behind

The move from the first list to the second is what actually raises a React developer's pay, on salary or on contract. Adding another UI library does not.

Frontend React Developer Jobs

Many US companies hire specifically for the UI layer, working alongside designers and a backend team. These roles emphasise component-driven architecture and reusable libraries, responsive and cross-browser behaviour, integration with a design system such as Tailwind, Material UI or Chakra, and performance work like code splitting and lazy loading.

The two skills that most reliably move this role up its pay band are accessibility and Core Web Vitals, because both are measurable and both carry legal or commercial consequences. Our front end developer guide covers them in detail — the WCAG 2.1 Level AA requirements and deadlines, the volume of accessibility litigation, and the current Core Web Vitals thresholds — rather than repeating them here.

React Full Stack Developer Jobs

React paired with a backend is the most common full stack shape in US hiring: React with Node and Express, or with Python on Django or FastAPI, or with Java on Spring Boot. These roles pay more, and the reason is worth being precise about — it is not that the work is harder, it is that the title is frequently benchmarked against the software developer occupation at $135,980 rather than the web developer occupation at $92,650.

That is roughly $43,000 of median between two adverts that can carry the same title, which is exactly the trap our full stack developer guide exists to unpick. For the backend halves specifically, see Python developer jobs in USA and Java developer jobs in USA.

Freelance and Remote React Developer Jobs

Remote React developer jobs in USA banner for SaaS, e-commerce and startup teams

React is well suited to both. US startups and agencies hire freelancers to build MVPs and landing pages, convert design files, add features to existing applications, and take on performance and refactoring work. Remote employment is close to standard at SaaS, e-commerce and dashboard-heavy companies.

"Remote" in a React advert means one of four quite different things, and which one it is decides your eligibility as much as your rate:

  • Fully remote, US-based. Work from anywhere in the US, usually with occasional travel to an in-person team gathering. Budget for that travel; it is rarely as optional as it sounds.
  • Remote, internationally open. The employer hires outside the US at all. Pay here is normally indexed to where you live, not to where the company is registered.
  • Remote contract. Fixed term, frequently six months or longer, with the rate left open or negotiable. This is the band where knowing your own floor before the call matters most.
  • Hybrid-remote. Mostly remote with periodic travel to a home office city. Ask how periodic, in days per quarter, before you accept rather than after.

Our remote React developer guide and our remote frontend developer guide, which covers why a remote advert can lawfully exclude your state and which state's tax follows an employee, work through the employment mechanics behind those four: W-2 against 1099, what an employer of record actually does, and which state's income tax follows you.

Three things to settle before you agree a price or accept an offer:

  • Scope, if the work is fixed-price. "Convert this design to React" has no defined end — responsive breakpoints, error states, browser support and revision rounds all sit outside the sentence. Price the states and the revisions, or bill hourly.
  • Tax and fees, if you are US-based. A freelance rate has to absorb the 15.3 per cent federal self-employment tax, Schedule C filing, 1099-NEC forms and quarterly estimated payments. Our web developer guide works through those numbers, and platform fees, in full.
  • Whether pay is indexed to your location, if you are outside the US. Be careful with the claim that remote US roles pay US rates — most employers benchmark to your local market, and whether you are engaged as a contractor or through an employer of record changes your protections substantially. The full stack developer guide covers that arrangement and the misclassification tests that apply.

If you are building a first track record from outside the US, our guide to remote jobs with no experience covers the realistic first steps.

Entry-Level and Junior React Developer Jobs

The entry market is real and crowded. "Junior React developer" and "entry level React developer" are the same posting under two names, so search both.

The titles do drift apart at the edges. "Entry level" is the more common wording on salaried engineering tracks aimed at recent computer science graduates, while "junior" appears more often on agency and closely supervised production roles. It is a tendency rather than a rule, and it is not worth filtering on. Search both, and judge the advert rather than the adjective.

What separates candidates:

  • JavaScript fundamentals. Most failed React interviews are failed JavaScript interviews wearing a costume
  • Hooks and why a component re-rendered, which is the question that sorts people who have used React from people who understand it
  • A current toolchain — Vite or Next.js, not Create React App
  • TypeScript, now on most US React postings
  • Two or three live, deployed projects with clean code and a real README. One deployed application beats ten tutorial builds, and one that handles its own error states beats a prettier one that does not

Our entry level React developer guide goes further into what to build, how to read a junior advert, and the paid apprenticeship route most candidates never look at.

Senior React Developer Jobs

"Senior React developer" is the title where the two occupations on this page separate hardest. The same words can describe a role benchmarked against the web developer median of $92,650, where the top tenth starts above $162,290, or one benchmarked against the software developer median of $135,980. Seniority in years does not decide which; the scope of the job does.

What moves a React role into the higher benchmark is ownership rather than output: deciding rendering strategy and where state lives, setting performance budgets and holding the team to them, choosing what gets built and what gets deleted, and reviewing other people's work. A senior advert that still describes implementing designs is a senior title on the lower band.

Two things worth asking before the offer stage: whether the role has a published band and where you sit inside it, and whether the team has anyone more senior in the front end. Being the most senior React person in a company is a different job from being a senior on a team, and it is frequently paid as though it were the same one.

There is more to the grade than the band. Our senior React developer guide covers what US law actually attaches to the word: the overtime exemption the title crosses into, why the mentoring duties that justify it also remove any hourly claim, and the one place federal rules put a number on "senior".

React Jobs That Need Clearance or Citizenship

A slice of the US React market is closed to most applicants before skill is considered, and the advert says so in a line that is easy to skim past: US citizenship required, Public Trust eligible, or an active Secret clearance. Federal agencies and the contractors who build for them run a great deal of React work, and this is the filter on all of it.

Two requirements get conflated here constantly, and they are not the same thing. The Office of Personnel Management designates federal positions on two separate axes:

  • National security sensitivity — Noncritical-Sensitive, Critical-Sensitive and Special-Sensitive, graded by whether a compromise could cause "significant or serious", "exceptionally grave" or "inestimable" damage to the national security. These are the positions that carry a clearance.
  • Public Trust risk — Low, Moderate and High Risk, graded by the effect on "the integrity and efficiency of the service" rather than on national defence. A Public Trust position is a background investigation, not a security clearance.

A role can sit on one axis or on both, and the designation decides which investigation runs. That in turn decides your start date more than anything on your CV does: a Public Trust role can onboard in weeks, and a cleared one will not.

Three things follow from that:

  • You cannot apply for a clearance by yourself. It attaches to a position, and a sponsoring agency or cleared contractor initiates it. Any service offering to sell you one is selling nothing.
  • An existing clearance belongs on the CV, with its level and whether it is current, because it removes months from an employer's timeline and is priced accordingly.
  • Read the eligibility line before the tech stack. "US citizenship required" is not negotiable by being good at React.

If you are not a US citizen, this part of the market is not open to you, and no amount of skill opens it. The commercial, startup and remote sections of this page are where your applications belong.

A large part of that commercial market is reached through staffing and consulting firms, whose adverts lead with the same eligibility line. Our React JS contract jobs guide covers what applies once you are inside one: why unpaid time between projects is non-payment of wages, what may not be deducted from your pay, and which of those adverts the law actually reaches.

At the other end of the same market, large product companies and banks advertise the same work as "software engineer" and pay in base, equity and bonus rather than salary alone. Our React software engineer guide covers what that structure is worth and how each part is taxed, including the day your shares become a payday and the election you will be told to file that cannot be filed.

And if you are still studying, the way in is an internship. Our React developer internship guide covers the question that decides whether one is worth taking, which is whether it has to be paid, and how an F-1 student takes one at all.

Two of the commonest variants of this advert are worth reading properly rather than skipping. When one names JavaScript separately from React, it means to test the language separately, and our JavaScript React guide shows which of those questions come from the language standard and which from the browser one. When it names TypeScript, our React TypeScript guide explains what the types do at compile time and why they cannot protect you from an API response.

One last thing about reading these adverts. Whether the pay band appears at all is often not the employer's choice: ten US states and New York City now require the range in the posting, and several of those rules reach remote roles advertised from anywhere. Our React front end engineer guide sets out which states, which tests, and how to use them to see bands before you spend an application.

And if the role reaches past the interface into the API and the database, our full stack React guide covers what changes once you hold user data: the secure development duty the FTC names by rule, when a breach starts a statutory clock, and why you are almost never personally liable for either.

How to Apply

Postings appear daily. Set separate alerts for "React developer", "frontend engineer" and "Next.js" — the second surfaces the higher-band product roles that do not put React in the title, and the third surfaces the framework work specifically.

Before you send the application

  • Link deployed projects, not just repositories. A live URL is checked; a repository often is not.
  • Make sure nothing in the portfolio is scaffolded with Create React App.
  • Name your state management choice and say why you made it. The reason matters more than the library.
  • For remote roles, put your time zone and overlap hours in the first two lines.
  • For freelance work, include one short case study with a before-and-after number — load time, bundle size, conversion.

Our guide to applying for React developer jobs takes the process itself apart: what a federal application demands that a commercial one does not, what an employer is allowed to ask you, when a background check needs your written permission, and how to spot a job scam before it costs you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do React developers make in the USA?

Most React roles are counted in the BLS web developer occupation: a $92,650 median as of May 2025, from under $48,100 to above $162,290. Product-engineering roles that use React are benchmarked against the software developer occupation at $135,980 instead.

Is Create React App still usable?

It runs, but it was officially sunset on 14 February 2025 and receives no security patches or dependency updates. React's documentation now points new projects at Vite for single-page apps, or at a framework such as Next.js. A CRA-based portfolio dates you.

Should I learn Next.js or stick with plain React?

Next.js opens more US postings and is the single highest-leverage addition if you already know React. Vite remains the right default for internal tools and dashboards, and being able to say when a framework is unnecessary reads as judgement in an interview.

Do I need TypeScript for React jobs in the USA?

In practice, yes. It appears on the majority of US React postings, and its absence is one of the more common reasons a CV is filtered out before a human reads it.

What is the entry-level salary for a React developer?

$65,000 to $90,000 at product companies and in the major metros. Lower is common at agencies and outside the big cities, given that a tenth of the occupation earns under $48,100.

Is freelance React work worth it?

It can be, but the rate depends on which work you take. Figma-to-React conversion is the most substitutable and the most price-shopped; state architecture, performance and refactoring carry a real rate. Price the states and revisions, or bill hourly.

Are remote React jobs common in the USA?

Very. Front end work is reviewable through a pull request, so SaaS, e-commerce and dashboard-heavy companies hire remotely as a matter of course. Confirm overlap hours and whether pay is indexed to your location before the offer stage.

React or Angular or Vue for US jobs?

React opens the most US postings by a wide margin, usually alongside Next.js. Vue and Angular are common in particular sectors and enterprises. Depth in one interviews far better than a list of three.
