Paramedic Jobs in Toronto, Ontario: Training and Certification Path

To become a paramedic in Toronto, complete a Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) diploma or an accepted equivalency, pass Ontario's Advanced Emergency Medical Care Assistant (AEMCA) examination, hold a Class F driver's licence, and pass Toronto Paramedic Services' written test, interviews, physical test and base hospital evaluation. Toronto's recruitment for spring 2027 is open until 18 November 2026 for full-time Primary Care Paramedics (Paramedic Level 1), and applications go only through the City of Toronto's job site, never by email or post. This guide uses the City's recruitment page and its Spring 2027 guide, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Humber College, all checked on 27 October 2026.

Start With the Primary Care Paramedic Route

Ontario has three paramedic levels: Primary Care Paramedic, Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) and Critical Care Paramedic. Toronto's Level 1 jobs are PCP posts. The word "Advanced" in AEMCA does not make you an Advanced Care Paramedic; AEMCA is the PCP certificate. To practise you need three things together: the Ministry of Health certificate, employment with a certified ambulance service, and authorisation from the medical director of a regional base hospital. Choose Recognised Training

Toronto asks for a PCP programme from a College of Applied Arts and Technology or equivalent. Humber College, for example, runs a four-semester Ontario College Diploma in Paramedic at its North Campus in Toronto, starting in September, and admits on an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent plus mandatory admission testing in senior-level sciences. Other colleges set their own requirements. Compare total costs, placements and travel, and remember that a first aid course is not paramedic training. Source: Humber: Paramedic diploma.

Complete the AEMCA Certification Step

The AEMCA examination is for graduates of approved programmes and applicants accepted through the equivalency process. Use the Ministry's current exam dates and application package for deadlines, documents and fees. Toronto accepts AEMCA certification or AEMCA pending status, but the Spring 2027 guide notes that Ministry rules allow only 210 days after PCP programme completion to work as AEMCA pending, so plan your exam date around your start date. Plan Your Driving Qualification

Toronto requires an Ontario Class F licence or better to work, and you must qualify for the City's equipment operating permits. At the Stage 1 exam a G2 licence or higher is accepted. Check the driving-history rule carefully, because the two official documents differ: the recruitment page says no suspension for three years and no more than three demerit points, while the Spring 2027 guide asks for a three-year driver's abstract with no suspension in the past five years and no more than three demerit points. Follow the stricter five-year rule unless the City tells you otherwise. Source: City of Toronto: Paramedic jobs.

Know the Spring 2027 Recruitment Stages

The Spring 2027 guide sets these tentative dates:

  • Applications: open until 18 November 2026.
  • Stage 1 written exam: 12 and 13 December 2026, in person at 895 Eastern Ave, Toronto. Bring your licence and a college diploma, an individualised expect-to-graduate letter (graduating on or before 10 June 2027) or a Ministry equivalency application. AEMCA-certified candidates are exempt.
  • Stage 2 Multiple Mini Interviews: 4 to 15 January 2027, in person.
  • Conditional offers: mid February for the March class and early March for the May and June classes.

Pass the Physical Assessment

You need a successful Ottawa Paramedic Physical Abilities Test (OPPAT) dated within one year of your start date; for a 31 March 2027 start, the result must be dated 31 March 2026 or later. Paramedics already working for another service and certified by an Ontario base hospital are exempt. Prepare with the OPPAT provider's own instructions rather than a general gym score.

Complete Base Hospital Requirements

Conditional hires must complete an orientation and an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), or an equivalency process, with the Sunnybrook Centre for Prehospital Medicine. After the job offer you submit a BLS or HCP CPR certificate valid on your first day (CPR Level C is not accepted, and CPR is valid for one year) and a Standard First Aid certificate unless you are AEMCA certified. Keep a tracker of every certificate and its expiry date, because missing documents can remove you from the process.

Follow the Correct Equivalency Route

Ontario runs two equivalency processes. Paramedic Labour Mobility is for PCPs or ACPs trained outside Ontario who are registered in good standing and practising, or recently practising, in another Canadian province or territory; it leads to an AEMCA or ACP certificate. Paramedics trained outside Canada use the Ministry's other equivalency route and need an individual decision. Qualification recognition and the right to work in Canada are separate questions. Submit a Clear Application

Apply through the City of Toronto's job site from the recruitment page. State your programme, expected completion date, AEMCA status and licence class exactly as your documents show them, and do not write "fully qualified" while an exam is outstanding. Prepare interview examples about responsibility, respectful communication and responding to feedback, and protect patient confidentiality when you describe placements.

A Note for Internationally Trained Paramedics

A paramedic qualification from Pakistan or another country is not Ontario certification. Start with the Ministry's equivalency guidance, and sort out Canadian work authorisation separately; Toronto's recruitment does not sponsor visas. Read Work Visas for Pakistanis in 2026 for the Canadian permit rules.
