Why Many Remote US Jobs Say "US Only"
A US employer that puts someone on its payroll has to handle US tax, benefits and employment law in that person's state, so many postings ask for US residency or work authorisation. Read the location line in every advert before you apply: a posting that says "US only" or "must be authorised to work in the US" is not open to you as an employee, however attractive the pay looks.
Where Pakistanis Do Find Online Work for US Clients
- Freelance marketplaces such as Upwork, Fiverr and Freelancer, where US clients hire contractors worldwide per project or per hour.
- Remote-first companies that hire contractors in many countries; the advert says "worldwide" or "any location".
- Pakistani IT and BPO companies that serve US clients and employ you in Pakistan, usually with a local salary.
- Direct contract work for a small US business, for example virtual assistance, data entry, customer support or web development.

What Do Remote US Jobs Pay?
US salary figures are not a promise to a contractor in Pakistan. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a May 2025 median of $92,650 a year for web developers, but a client hiring a contractor abroad usually prices the work by project or hourly rate, and that can be well below the US employee figure. Ask for the rate in writing before you start, and compare it with the work hours involved.
How You Get Paid (and What Pakistan Allows)
- Marketplace or bank transfer. Use a method that lets the money arrive through a Pakistani bank. PayPal is not available as a normal account in Pakistan.
- Payoneer and similar services. Budget for conversion pricing, which Payoneer describes as roughly 2% above the mid-market rate; a $1,000 withdrawal can cost about $20.
- State Bank of Pakistan retention rule. Under EPD Circular Letter No. 06 of 2026, IT companies and freelancers may retain USD 5,000 (or equivalent) a month or 50% of export proceeds, whichever is higher, in an Exporters' Special Foreign Currency Account.
The US Tax Form You May Be Asked For
A US business paying a non-US person for services done outside the United States usually asks for Form W-8BEN, the IRS certificate of foreign status. Services performed outside the US are generally not taxed as US income, but your Pakistani tax position is separate, so confirm both with a qualified adviser.
How to Spot a Fake Remote Job
- You are asked to pay for training, equipment or a "registration fee" before you start.
- The employer sends you a cheque or asks you to move money through your account.
- The offer arrives by WhatsApp or Telegram with "daily payment" and "no experience, no investment" promises.
- The interview is only text chat and the company has no verifiable website or address.
