Industrial electricians do earn more than electricians who wire houses. What most guides get wrong is the size of the gap. It is not a fixed 30 to 40 per cent: it depends almost entirely on which industry you work in, and the official data shows it ranging from about 17 per cent to about 70 per cent. This page uses the Bureau of Labor Statistics survey of employers, not job-board advertisements, to show where the money actually is.
The Short Answer
BLS does not publish separate figures for "residential" and "industrial" electricians. It publishes electrician pay by the industry the employer is in, which is the closest official proxy. For May 2025:
| Where the electrician works | Median annual wage |
|---|---|
| Employment services (agency work) | $57,760 |
| Electrical contractors | $61,570 |
| Residential building construction | $63,580 |
| Nonresidential building construction | $64,010 |
| Primary metal manufacturing | $69,010 |
| Utility system construction | $73,310 |
| Manufacturing, all | $74,550 |
| Chemical manufacturing | $80,560 |
| Local government | $82,120 |
| Mining, except oil and gas | $83,940 |
| Motor vehicle parts manufacturing | $91,290 |
| Motor vehicle manufacturing | $92,250 |
| Oil and gas extraction | $103,640 |
| Electric power generation, transmission and distribution | $106,640 |
| Petroleum and coal products manufacturing | $107,840 |
For comparison, the median for all electricians was $63,190.
What the Numbers Actually Say
- House wiring pays close to the national median. Electricians employed by residential builders earned a $63,580 median, slightly above electrical contractors at $61,570. Most residential electricians actually work for electrical contractors, so the contractor figure is the better guide to house-wiring pay.
- General manufacturing pays about 17 per cent more. $74,550 against $63,580.
- Auto plants pay about 45 per cent more. Motor vehicle and parts manufacturing sit above $91,000.
- Refining, power and oil and gas pay about 63 to 70 per cent more. All three are above $103,000.
So "industrial pays 30 to 40 per cent more" is neither right nor wrong: it is an average across very different employers. A maintenance electrician in a metals plant may earn barely more than a house-wiring electrician; one in a refinery earns far more.
Two related occupations BLS counts separately
Some of what job adverts call "industrial electrician" work is recorded by BLS under other occupations:
| Occupation | Employed | Median annual wage |
|---|---|---|
| Electrical and electronics repairers, commercial and industrial equipment | 65,010 | $74,090 |
| Electrical and electronics repairers, powerhouse, substation and relay | 20,720 | $103,020 |
Why Industrial Work Pays More
| House wiring | Industrial | |
|---|---|---|
| Workplace | Homes, apartments, small renovations | Factories, refineries, power plants, mines |
| Core skills | Circuits, panels, lighting, code compliance | Motor controls, drives, PLCs, instrumentation, high voltage |
| Schedule | Mostly daytime, Monday to Friday | Shifts, weekends, on-call |
| Cost of a delay | A household waits a day | A production line or refinery unit stops |
| Typical ceiling | Running your own contracting business | Controls specialist or maintenance lead |
Overtime widens the gap further than any median shows. Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees are paid at least time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek, and plant shift work produces far more of those hours than residential jobs do. The medians above are based on straight-time pay; they leave overtime out.
The Training Is the Same at the Start
BLS describes the standard route into either specialism as a four- or five-year apprenticeship, with about 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training each year plus classroom instruction, and most states license electricians after an exam on the National Electrical Code and local rules. The split happens afterwards: an industrial electrician adds motor control, drives and PLC skills on top of the same licence.
What "Wireman" Means
The word means different things depending on where the advert comes from:
- United States, "inside wireman". A journeyman classification in union electrical work, trained through the apprenticeship programmes run jointly by the IBEW and NECA under the Electrical Training Alliance. Inside wireman apprenticeships are typically five years, with at least 8,000 hours on the job and around 900 hours in the classroom, varying by local programme. Inside wiremen work on commercial and industrial installations.
- India, Pakistan and Gulf recruitment, "wireman". A trade title rather than a licence grade. In India, Wireman is a two-year trade under the Craftsmen Training Scheme, certified with a National Trade Certificate. Gulf adverts use it loosely for an electrician who installs and maintains building wiring.
If you see "wireman" jobs abroad advertised through a recruiter, the employer pays the recruitment cost in both the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Never pay an agent for a visa or a job offer.
Which Path Should You Choose?
- Choose house wiring if you want daytime hours, visible results on every job and the quickest route to working for yourself.
- Choose industrial if you are willing to work shifts and learn controls, and you want the highest employee pay the trade offers.
- Pick the industry, not just the specialism. The difference between a metals plant and a refinery is larger than the difference between house wiring and a metals plant.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do industrial electricians earn more than residential electricians?
Yes, but how much depends on the industry. On BLS data for May 2025, electricians in manufacturing earned a $74,550 median, against $63,580 for those employed by residential builders and $61,570 at electrical contractors.
Which industry pays electricians the most?
Of the industries BLS reports, petroleum and coal products manufacturing had a $107,840 median, followed by electric power generation and transmission at $106,640 and oil and gas extraction at $103,640.
Is it true industrial electricians earn 30 to 40 per cent more?
Not as a rule. The official data shows a gap of about 17 per cent in general manufacturing and about 70 per cent in petroleum refining, compared with residential building construction.
How much does a house wiring electrician earn in the US?
BLS reported a $63,580 median for electricians employed by residential builders and $61,570 for electrical contractors, who employ most electricians who wire homes.
What is an inside wireman?
A union journeyman electrician trained through an IBEW and NECA apprenticeship, typically five years with at least 8,000 on-the-job hours, working on commercial and industrial installations.
Does the training differ between industrial and residential electricians?
The starting route is the same four- or five-year apprenticeship and state licence. Industrial electricians add motor control, drives and PLC skills afterwards.
Does overtime count in these pay figures?
No. The BLS medians are straight-time pay. Industrial shift work often adds time-and-a-half overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act, which widens the real gap.
What does wireman mean in Gulf job adverts?
A general trade title for an electrician working on building wiring, often asking for an ITI-type trade certificate. It is not a licence grade.
